Q: How much electricity can I generate?
A: This depends on several factors, including the size and location of your system. Solar systems generate more in a sunny, shade-free area. Residential customers wishing to participate in Southern Pioneer’s current net metering program are required to size their renewable generation to the load of the connected service and cannot install greater than 15 kW of renewable generation per Kansas State statute. Please see other size limits for commercial and parallel generation rates.
Q: What happens during a power outage?
A: Renewable generation is required to shut down during a power outage for the safety of our line crews and other consumers. If the renewable generation stayed active, it could potentially backfeed onto Southern Pioneer’s lines, causing a safety hazard. Systems will need a safety interlock which must be tested before interconnecting with our distribution lines.
Q: Will renewable generation make it possible to not have an electric bill?
A: In most cases, no. This may differ from what you hear from renewable energy vendors. You will likely still need to be connected to Southern Pioneer Electric’s power for service reliability. When your renewable generation is not enough to meet your required load (amount of power needed for your home), you will be purchasing power from Southern Pioneer Electric. If the needs of the load outweigh the amount of power generated by renewable energy during the month, you will have an electric bill. Please also note that any active account on Southern Pioneer Electric’s system is subject to customer charges and taxes regardless of the amount of power usage.
Q: Can Southern Pioneer Electric recommend a renewable energy vendor?
A: Southern Pioneer cannot recommend any renewable energy vendors. Your best action is to research the vendor and ask questions before entering any contracts.
Q: What is the best way to get started with renewable energy?
A: To get the most out of your renewable energy generation, it is a good idea to make your home as energy-efficient as possible. Next, find a reliable vendor and call Southern Pioneer Electric to determine the amount of generation appropriate for you.
